How to protect ear-canal health

Guidance drawn from the World Health Organization's IMCI training manual, Module 7: Ear Problems — the official resource used to standardise frontline care.

  • Moisture and heat retention; blocked airflow. Keep the ear dry; use dry wicking; no oils or fluids; don't plug the ear; avoid water entry and swimming.
  • Discharge not dried. Dry wicking is core care — drying is the only effective therapy for a draining ear.
  • Poor follow-up. Acute: review in 5 days if discharge persists. Chronic: review in 14 days; refer if not improving.
  • Hygiene and wear time drive risk more than device type. Clean weekly, don't share, and let ears breathe. (Headphonesty editorial guide, May 2023)
